Reviving History
The Fernie Chautauqua recreates the Dominion Chautauqua, held in Fernie from 1917 to 1935. Chautauqua was a travelling institution begun at Chautauqua Lake, NY with roots in Canadian Methodist Temperance rallies. Chautauquas carried education, inspiration and entertainment across North America and consisted of musical numbers, lectures, dramatic productions and magic or puppet shows.
The Fernie Museum has brought back this tradition by hosting an annual festival celebrating Fernie’s rich history and culture. This annual family event has featured musical entertainment, lectures, dramatic productions and demonstrations. The festival is held in Fernie’s heritage district in cooperation with many community partners and with logistical support provided by the City of Fernie.
